ZYX Omega Phono Cartridge
Latest addition to the ZYX range is the ZYX Omega and Diamond Series of phono cartridges. Omega is an evolution of the 4D cartridge design with a number of new features in addition to the already excellent qualities of perfect channel balance which enhance the ability to represent the sound stage in a convincing manner.
Dual Layer Armature: The armature is the frame upon which the generator coil for a cartridge is wound and is the main source of mechanical vibration. Reducing the mass of the armature and the number of turns on the coil will result in improved sound quality. ZYX addresses these two issues simultaneously. Adopting a dual layer armature of high permeability metal that is 6 times more efficient results in a generator assembly with lower vibrations and higher output for a given number of coil turns. Therefore ZYX can use less coil turns for same cartridge output, and reduce the moving mass. Eddy currents are eliminated because the dual layers are assembled with opposing polarities. The end result is an armature that produces sound excelling in texture, dynamics and emerging from a very low noise floor.
Semi-Skeleton Body: To reduce cartridge body resonances to the minimum ZYX adopts a "Parthenon" like structure. Many manufacturers use exotic, expensive materials to tune their cartridge bodies, but at the end of the day they are only playing with colourations. We believe that there is no body like "no body". Hence by reducing the cartridge body to the minimum there is nothing to store energy and reflect it back to the cantilever, thus colouring the sound.
Microridge Stylus: The Microridge stylus has the edges of the diamond shank set parallel to the sides of the cantilever. With this type of stylus the hardest axis of the crystal is aligned to act as the contact point with the record groove. This gives stable and smooth tracking and produces a very refined sound, with the additional benefit of giving the stylus an extended life time over 2000 hours. The Microridge stylus was originally developed in Japan and offers the highest performance of any stylus profile.

Sapphire Terminal Board: This non-metal mineral is the next hardest to diamond and is employed in Omega and Diamond's terminal boards to lock the output terminals and isolate them from unwanted vibrations.
Lapis Lazuli Balancing Weight: ZYX uses a Lapis Lazuli Balancing weight uniquely to cope with the "Centroid Phenomenon". If the "centroid" (geometric centre) of a vibration system which is near the centre of gravity corresponds to the centroid of a cartridge body, then 100% of the vibration energy of the recorded audio signals will be transmitted to the generator system to be fully converted into electrical signals. This is the ideal cartridge design. Conversely, if the position of the vibration system is away from the body centroid then 100% of the vibration energy will not be transmitted to the generator and the lost energy will convert to other forms of unwanted energy. This will be harmful in a cartridge that traces very subtle signals. Because the fulcrum point of a vibration system having a stylus tip at the front is supported by the body, so the fulcrum point has to be moved by this vibration. A spherical object fixed to the front of the cartridge balances the cartridge at the sweet spot of the cartridge body and the gravity point of the vibration system. This then concentrates all of the vibration energy in the region of the generator system. ZYX has determined after exhaustive testing that a Lapis Lazuli ball having a hardness of 5.0, specific gravity of 2.5, diameter of 8mm and weight of about 1g placed in the most appropriate position will form the best cartridge structure.
In addition to focusing the vibration energy at the centroid, the ball also damps the the energy after it has entered the generator. The mechanical energy flowing from the stylus through the cantilever to the generator creating the electrical signal then flows out through the body of the generator to which the ball is attached at it's North Pole. The crystalline structure of the ball absorbs the vibrations as they run down the ball so that by the time they reach the South Pole of the ball they have been canceled. The result of this attention to detail in resonance control is a sound with energy and clarity that is clearly audible.
Super High Speed Magnetic Circuit: First introduced in the 4D series cartridge this circuit nulls magnetic resistance within the magnetic gap, and enables high speed power generation for signals over the entire bandwidth without any time delay. Even higher harmonic elements that determine the texture of the musical instrument can be simultaneously reproduced and delivered in a smooth, natural, dynamic and realistic sound.
